Martin Scorsese unites Robert De Niro with Al Pacino AND lures Joe Pesci out of retirement to tell an epic gangster story in The Irishman, but is that enough to entertain Wayne? That's the big question out of this week's review, as Paul defends the film's length, while Wayne suggests Marty needs to know when to go home after a good night out.

Top 10 Thrillers of the 2010s

2020 is knocking at our door, and to commemorate the occasion, Wayne and Paul begin their month long look back at the decade that was, commencing with their Top 10 Thrillers from that time period.

 

The lads are surprisingly agreeable as they break down the very best films which had them clenching their buttocks on the edge of their seat, but that does not stop Paul from running rampant with a new addition to the Soundboard. And of course, there are still the usual left field picks from both.

 

Is Denis Villeneuve the best director in this genre for the decade? How many films can Wayne possibly have on his list starring Ben Affleck? And who tries to shoehorn in films which might be considered more horror than thriller? (Hint: It's probably not who you'd think).

The Mandalorian review

Disney+ has launched in the US and Australia (sorry to the UK listeners!) and with it comes the first ever live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. Wayne (the Star Wars die-hard fan) and Paul (the more level-headed pragmatist) dive in to the end of Episode 3 to determine if the wait has been worthwhile, or whether most everyone is high on the same Star wars nostalgic fumes ...

BONUS: The Worst 10 of the Movie Watching Challenge (with Daniel from The IMDB Journey Podcast)

As regular listeners will be aware, Paul foolishly challenged Daniel from The IMDB Journey Podcast to a Movie Watching Challenge at the start of the year. The rules were initially simple: who could watch more films in 2019 that were more than 70 mins long? But as time went by, what happened to the competitors? And what did it do to their appreciation of film when it was no longer about quality and all about quantity.

In this month's November bonus episode, Paul sits down with Daniel to answer these questions specifically and unpack the Challenge more generally, before getting into a Countdown of the very worst films both sat through on their way to 500 films.

Oh dear. Strap yourself in, dear listener, as the boys cobble together two of the more questionable lists in the show's history as they talk the Top 10 Martial Arts films. Paul admits from the get-go that this topic is not his specialty, but one might expect more from Wayne with his background of studying martial arts, and the fact that there is a ninja-toe and nun-chucks laying about the studio.

 

Alas, the answers to who does not have a real Bruce Lee film on their list and who has included a TMNT film may surprise you. But nothing will offend the martial arts film fans out there more than some of the other omissions from BOTH of the lads' lists.

Ford v Ferrari & Charlie's Angels reviews

Two reviews for the price of one this week, with Wayne being the canary in the cage in seeing both films, while Paul chose wisely in prioritising Ford v Ferrari. 

Does Elizabeth Banks have the right of it in suggesting men won't watch action films starring women (lol Captain Marvel, Aliens, Salt, Tomb Raider, Underworld etc etc) or is it just a poor sequel/reboot? And who comes away with the chocolates between Matt Damon and Christian Bale when both help Ford take on Ferrari?

Top 10 Superior Sequels

Sigh. What are the odds that two co-hosts could ever mess up a brief so completely that two EFFECTIVELY different lists end up being made? ... Well, if you're listening to this podcast, those chances are pretty damn high, because for this week's show, the Top 10 Superior Sequels, Wayne decides sequel means the film following its immediate predecessor, completely ignoring the relevance of all other sequels in a franchise, as Paul, with his higher order executive functioning, was easily able to discern.

 

So it may not be a level playing field, but Paul & Wayne put their best feet forward in suggesting there are ten (and more!) sequels that outshine the original film in a franchise (or in Wayne's case the film that preceded it).

 

Do they nail them all? Can they get through an Episode like this without turning on one another. And who had the bigger blooper at Episode's end?
