The Countdown

The theatre just got a whole lot more colourful as Barbie opened across the world to much fanfare and positive reviews. The boys were there, front and centre, to see it, and here bring you their instant reaction review, recorded just minutes after walking out from catching the film.

Can a film about a toy that was "just for girls" when it was released in 1959 entertain two middle aged male reviewers who were bemused by how much pink was being worn at the incredible premiere screening? And further to that, can Greta Gerwig do what even Tom Cruise could not and set the box office alight this "summer" season?

Countdown #433

Music is back for the Countdown this week as Paul and Wayne countdown their favourite male solo artists. From the '50s through to the current millennium, pretty much every era of music is represented in this one, so there should be a little something for everyone.

Speaking of, everyone thinks they know Wayne's highly predictable number one, but does he have a few tricks in store? And when it comes right down to it, does Paul throw the biggest curveball of the Ep?

Find out - Jump Jump! - as The Countdown continues ...

The latest blockbuster in the franchise to rival James Bond is here and Wayne is in seventh heaven! There's spies and action and thrills and Rebecca Ferg Ferg. But most of all, there's T to the C, and Wayne is so happy, he saw this film twice in a week!

Paul, as we all know, is harder to impress (unless it's a ludicrous horror film), so what does he make of the 163 minute run time and the most conversations about a MacGuffin this side of a NOK list?

Countdown #432

The incredibly awesome and efficient Stew from the Stew World Podcast joins the boys this week to talk a topic so quintessentially Countdown that it's a surprise it doesn't get re-done every 20 episodes or so: The Top 10 Action Comedies.

Stew brings his A-game, while Paul battles tirelessly to suggest adventure films qualify as action-comedies. Wayne, meanwhile, is completely off in his own world banging on about Betamax (for example), so it should come as no surprise that his list is ludicrously all over the place and features less action than your typical walk to the local twerking behind shop.

Has Wayne finally jumped the shark? Will Stew regret his decision to return to The Countdown? Won't someone else stand up for the Last Crusade alongside Paul? And who drops the most controversial joke this week? (Hint: It's actually not Wayne.)

And don't forget to check out Paul on the fabulous ScreenRun podcast, as he joins the Lady Wan and Chris to talk John Carpenter's final film, The Ward.

Look around. Do you know your loved ones? REALLY know them? Could they possibly be reptilian aliens able to alter their appearance to look like humans akin to a plot lifted straight from John Carpenter's seminal 80s classic, They Live?

Wayne and Paul are intrigued to know whether Marvel can actually produce a good television show, and one based on more grounded spy-type shenanigans seems like a halfway decent place to start. So they're reviewing the first three episodes for you.

Does Samuel L Jackson still kick it as Nick Fury? Is this show worth your valuable time? And most importantly, which of the guys admits to being a Skrull?

Countdown #431

This week, Wayne and Paul are wrapping up all the television shows they've been watching through the first half of 2023 that they've not formally reviewed on the show.

Of course it's a Countdown, so the boys rank what they've watched from worst to best, as they continue their quest to save YOU time by recommending which shows to seek out, and which to steer well clear of.

The fifth and final Indiana Jones film is here with Harrison Ford recently decreeing: "When I go, so does Indy."

Of course Paul and Wayne were beyond keen to see Harrison don the Fedora and crack the bull whip while growling at everyone who should care that 'It belongs in a museum!", but does that mean the film is any good?

The early reviews were not kind, but will the lads find more to enjoy in this Indiana Jones adventure? There's only one way to find out, and that's to dial in your destiny with the latest episode of The Countdown podcast!

Countdown #430

This week the boys are counting down ten of the most recent films they've seen, from worst to best, as their latest Top 10 Last 10.

For once, Paul has made some poor decisions regarding what to press play on, while Wayne talks up having made similar bad calls, but it is soon revealed he is telling a porky pie as he seems to enjoy almost all of his films - which, at least in the case of Ghosted, is a HECK of a call.

Will every film on Wayne's list generate two to three laughs? Can Paul not have a horror film in his top five? The answers may shock you!

Tune in to find out if they do, as The Countdown continues ...

Who would have thought that the sequel to a surprise Netflic hit starring Aussie Chris Hemsworth would be the film to break the podcast?!

But here we are as Wayne and Paul go to war over the merits (or lack thereof) of Extraction 2, with Wayne boldly making the claim it is a better action film than John Wick 4. Paul, of course, does not take this lying down, and mayhem ensues ...

Find out which side of the divide you stand on, as The Countdown falters, but ultimately continues ...

Countdown #429

Why break down the best ten films from individual countries on a whole continent when you can group them all together and kill many birds with one stone?

That may be Wayne's thinking when it comes to talking the Top 10 Asian Films, or it could be he just hasn't seen enough films from this region of the world. Either way, Paul is frustrated by the number of fantastic films he's had to edit off this list.

But fear not, all is forgiven when International Action Star - or is that Hero? - Chow Yun Fat enters the fray and the boys can geek out over some of the incredible action films the continent (lol) of Asia has gifted us.

Find out which film tops them all, as The Countdown continues ...
