Episode 192: JCVD vs Steven Seagal / Creed II

This week's episode comes courtesy of top-level Patron, Cy Wezow, who wanted a focus on two action stars of the late 80s and beyond: Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. So in true Countdown style, Paul and Wayne opted to pit these two contrasting larger-than-life characters against one another to determine, once and for all, who is the superior star/martial artist/all round person.

 

Of course, regular listeners will know the boys don't think much of Steven Seagal, with Wayne once publicly proclaiming he could beat the man in a fight. Well, all that comes back into play as the lads sweat over whether they will somehow crown Seagal over JCVD - in direct contrast to the vast bulk of the listener feedback.

 

Whatever happens, along the way, you can be sure there's time for an impromptu Seagal Watch as well as much laughter and disbelief at how bad some of these supposedly good films from 20-30 years ago are.

 

The guys keep the testosterone flowing with a review of the newly released Creed II. Does lightning strike twice for Michael B Jordan and Sly Stallone? Or does it suffer from the common affliction known as Sequelitis?

Wayne rates a film Paul loved very lowly, then Paul rips a popular film a new one, before they again clash over Wayne's placement of a big Netflix release.

Disney and animation. What could be more wholesome entertainment, fit for the whole family, right?

WRONG. Because this week on The Countdown, nothing is scared as Justin and Krissy from So I Married a Movie Geek cast compete against the boys to determine who has the superior list of Disney animated films ... Except things go south fast as discussion about princesses and songs and anthropomorphic animals devolves into sex toys, twerking butts, and other general NC-17 topics.

Episode 189: The 10 Most Disappointing Films of All Time / The Girl in the Spider's Web

Did you know Wayne owns a copy of Attack of the Clones on DVD and LOVES it?! That's the most shocking news to come out of Ep 189 in which the boys get a whole heap of baggage off their chests by going to town on the films which disappointed them the most in their movie-watching lives.

No franchise, cinematic universe or beloved film series is sacred in this Countdown, with the guys sinking the boot right in to ten films each which tore their hearts out and tossed them away into the gutter like cheap pieces of trash.

All this AND a review of The Girl in the Spider's Web, which, it has to be said, fits the theme of this week's episode very nicely.

Episode 188: Top 10 Movies About Music / Bohemian Rhapsody

This week the boys are all about music in their movies as Patron Geordie Davidson directed them to countdown the very best movies about music! Now, to be clear, this is NOT a countdown of musicals which many have asked for, but rather films which focus on music in some (major) way throughout their run time. Should The Blues Brothers count? How annoyed will Wayne be when he realises he's forgotten three films he should have put on his list? And how many romances will Paul, completely against type, end up with on his list?

The answer to all these questions are just part of the Ep though, as the boys also get busy reviewing the much hyped but critically mixed Bohemian Rhapsody, while Paul has a big announcement to share with everyone.

Holy crap, this one turned out to be a thinker! 

 

Join Paul and Wayne this week for a heated countdown of the top ten reboots! Part of the reason it gets so prickly is a fair degree of consternation over just what constitutes a reboot? Is it the same as a remake? And where do prequels fit in? The answer may make you throw the damn phone across the room as Wayne decides to break one of the show's long agreed upon rules to compile his list; while Paul utilises his crystal ball and resorts to the intent of a film to justify his.

And that's all after the guys come at the 2018 "rebootaquel" (copyright, trade mark, it's ours, damnit!), Halloween, from very different perspectives. Could this be another horror that Wayne begrudgingly digs? Find out as the Countdown continues!

Episode 185: Top 10 Character Actors / Bad Times at the El Royale

This week it's either a good time or a bad time at the El Royale as a battle line is drawn right through the middle of the hotel, with one side representing one host's view that it was a quality, suspenseful film, and the other representing the POV that it was a bag of very long winded-ass

 

And as if that wasn't enough, the boys then clash over who qualifies as a character actor in this week's countdown celebrating those actors and actresses who disappear into their roles or are so utterly believable in any supporting role they take on.

 

It's certainly a fiery one! And, surprisingly enough, it features far less talk about genitalia than usual (which is how you KNOW the lads got distracted by each other's ridiculous viewpoints!)
