Inglorious Basterds (2009) review

This week the boys move fast to the cinema to see Hobbs and Shaw but emerge furious with the results ... Oh. No they don't. That recording got destroyed by a random computer glitch.

 

So without time to re-record, they've instead gone into the vault and produced a previously Patreon-Only review for your listening pleasure: Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds. This was considered most relevant given his latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is just now playing in theatres States-side, and is soon to be released here in Australia as well...

Welcome back, awesome listener, to another Top 10 Last 10 - a series of Episodes where the boys countdown ten films they've recently seen from worst to best, letting you know at what point they start recommending you check out what they've sat through. List-wise, Paul is reasonably pleased with his ten films, but Wayne has chosen poorly over the last few months and is ready to drop a dime on a whole bunch of films. The Lion King review

WARNING! There are SPOILERS throughout this review as it's the same damn story as the 1994 version!

It's been awhile since the guys went at one another over a review, and many of you prefer when the argy-bargy is a part of an episode. Well, good news, because this review is for you! 

Paul and Wayne clash over the merits (or lack thereof) of Disney's "live"-action (read: largely CGI) adaptation of their animated classic, The Lion King.  Wayne thinks it is beautiful re-telling of the story with some great expansions, while Paul considers it a soulless cash-grab that runs indeterminably long for no conceivable reason. Can one convince the other they're wrong? Or will it all end with much Soundboard smashing, many very naughty words being hurled at one another, and frustration galore?

Top 10 Rebel Films

This week the topic comes from top level Patron, David Powell, as he wanted to hear about the very best Rebel Films. David defined these as films featuring an uprising by a nation all the way through to an individual fighting back against a system which is keeping she or he down.

 

The boys, though initially a bit bemused, came to realise how wide-reaching and awesome this topic was. So Wayne (of course) decides to push the far-reaching boundaries, while Paul sticks to the brief and never once strays from the true heart of the topic. (He may also have written these show notes and never given Wayne a chance to edit them, but let's just refer to that as his own form of rebellion ...)

 

So prepare yourselves for some consternation, many not-subtle digs, a liberal use of the Soundboard (suck it, Dan!), and the return of some Wayne bloopers, as The Countdown continues ...

Stranger Things returned to our Netflix subscriptions at the start of July, and now everyone has had a chance to binge it, the boys are reacting with critical takes on this third visit to Hawkins, Indiana. Have The Duffer Brothers corrected the wrongs of Season 2? Is splitting the characters off into smaller groups a good idea? Does Hopper steal the Season? Is Erica really necessary for America? And who has the worst haircut of all the characters?

Get ready, dear listener, for what might be the most raucous and potentially offensive episode of the show yet! For the first time ever, Wayne has to be bleeped mid-show, and that's only when the guys are discussing their number nines of the Top10 Films That Would Never Get Made Today!

 

Trust us, this episode has it ALL as the boys marvel at some of the amazingly offensive films which were not only greenlit, but then allowed to be released once the finished product was observed. (Clearly, most studio executives and the creatives behind these films were coked out of their minds, because, well, most are from the '80s). Racism, homophobia, and sexism are but the entree of what this Ep has to offer, as Wayne defends some of his choices and Paul squirms audibly
