The Countdown

This week the guys are filling a significant hole in their topics covered on the show as they head back to the decade they were born, took their first tottering steps, and started watching films! Yes, it's the long-awaited and oft-requested countdown of the Top 10 Films of the 1970s.

So pull out those moth-balled flares, whack on the go-go boots, and let your chest hair fly as Paul and Wayne take you back in time to when film was generally atmospheric, deliberately paced and tackles some very serious themes. Unless you're Wayne who somehow overlooks many of the classics of the decade to include some, shall we say, light and fluffy fare - inclusions that evoke Paul's ire and make for a whole heap of laugh-infused arguments, as The Countdown continues ...

Netflix dropped another "big" film which was initially intended for a cinematic release and the boys eagerly checked it out, hoping for a reprieve from the B-grade VOD releases which have become a staple part of all movie podcasters lives.

But is Michael Showalter's The Lovebirds any good? One of the guys certainly doesn't think so, prompting the other to put together a less than impassioned defence of this (supposed) romantic comedic mystery action thriller. (Hahahahaha!)

Find out which side of the battle-line you fall on, as The Countdown continues ...

So this month's bonus Episode is a Patreon sampler: Two previously hidden away episodes of the show now available to all for the first time. (Look, sorry! It's been a hectic month and there was no time to record anything extra, especially not with the incredible Epic Film Guys hosting their annual Livestream for the Cure event at the time this Ep drops!). First up, a review for the cult classic, Flash Gordon, as requested by Patron extraordinaire, Geordie Davidson. This is the Ep where the infamous Flash Gordon sound drop got made it's debut. And secondly, a pretty funny story from Wayne's past which was within the Behind The Scenes $10 tier on Patreon. This one will have you wincing, laughing, or shaking your head. Possibly all three.

If any of this tickled your fancy, head on over to the show's Patreon to see what you're missing... But only after you've donated to the Livestream for the Cure to raise money for cancer research.

And, finally, if you don't want to scan the episode looking for a particular film, check out Paul's lists on Letterboxd and Wayne's lists (when he can be assed updating them) at the same.

This week the boys have climbed into their DeLoreans to pursue a phone box, a hot tub and a time sled across the time-space continuum, all while counting down their Top 10 Time Travel Movies!

There are paradoxes aplenty as the guys do what they do best. And there's even time enough for Paul to sing something badly and for Wayne to detail falling head over heels ... over a small dividing wall

In other words, strap yourselves in, dear listener, for the usual Soundboard-infused, NSFW laughs, as The Countdown continues ...

So Hulu dropped this second adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel earlier in the year starring Zoe Kravitz, and then COVID-19 happened, and it seemed to disappear without a trace.

Well, the boys tracked this down on the ABC iview app and checked out the first two Eps. Is it worth your time? Does the gender swap work? Can Wayne make it through the Episode without referring the show as a movie? (Hint: no.) And how much does Paul miss Hack Black?

Learn the answers to all these questions and more as The Countdown continues ...

This week, with thanks to top level Patron, Adam Mileur, for the topic, the boys are counting down the very best NON-human sidekicks - from BOTH film and television. In a first for the show, the boys get to play across mediums, expanding the potential candidates for their list and thereby ensuring both have omitted choices the other considered essential

Which, of course, makes for more of the chaotic laughs and WTF moments that characterise the show, as The Countdown continues ...

Warning: There are SPOILERS throughout this review.

James Bond gets a facelift in 1995's Goldeneye as Pierce Brosnan takes the mantle in what is widely considered to be one of the finest Bond adventures ever. But can Paul get behind a film in which the model shots look more fake than an airbrushed photo shoot? And is Wayne able to remain true to his one love, Tom Cruise, when Pierce is at his most debonair?

This week the boys are getting serious about their laughs, or maybe allow drama into their comedies, as they countdown their Top 10 Dramadies of all time

But what is a dramady? At what point does a film stop being a drama with enough comedy to qualify and become just a drama? The boys attempt to quantify very little, and instead roll with their guts on this one, making for an Ep that is sure to prove controversial, as The Countdown continues ...

He's heating up! Person! Delivers the facial! On my! Boom shakka lakka!

This week, with thanks to top level Patron Sally V for the topic, the boys are delving deep into their favourite movie mysteries! What killers that got away with it are the lads wanting a hard answer on? Which ambiguous endings have caught their attention? And which directors have stepped up to the plate to answer the very biggest questions from their most beloved films?
