We may have said goodbye to 2021, but the year was not without its cinematic merits. So for this BIG episode of the show, Wayne and Paul are revealing their very favourite films of the year and cheekily labeling them as the "Top 10" films of 2021!

 

But for this year best of year ep, the listeners are getting involved as 22 members of The Countdown Listener Community submitted their top 10 lists on very short (36 hour) notice, allowing the boys to compare what they're peddling with what a wider sample of the cinema-going audience has to say...

 

Will Wayne - the person who professes to hate horror - have a horror film on his list? Will Paul - the co-host who loathes musicals - find way to squeeze in a film about music on his? And what will the world say when Wayne sets the tone for the episode by talking about Free Guy?

The King’s Man review

The Kingsman?! You're not taking the Kingsman! (Bonus point for anyone who gets that deep-cut, completely inappropriate in 2022 reference.)

 

Yes, the boys this week go back to before it all began to review the prequel to the film that they covered in the very first episode of The Countdown. That film was Kingsman: The Secret Service. This film is The King's Man, with Matthew Vaughn back on co-writing and directing duties.

 

Sadly, the film just doesn't stack up to the fantastic original. Which begs the questions: Have the guys grown more cynical as they've aged along with the show? Or are prequels inherently inferior products? And, after hearing his score for this one, has Wayne finally assumed the Negatron mantle?

The WORST 10 Films of 2021

It's time, good listening folk. Time to name and shame the very WORST films that 2021 had to offer.

 

It was a tough year for most already, but these films rubbed our noses in that toughness and deserve nought but our contempt. And so, Wayne and Paul have taken it upon themselves to call out these pieces of shizzle; to slap a hazard stamp on these ten for the Countdown team, and ensure that as few of you as possible need to suffer in the way that they have.

 

Be it a franchise sequel, horror, superhero, thriller, sci-fi or family film, no genre is safe from the boys as they go to war against the time wasters, the offensively bad and the horrendously disappointing.

The Matrix Resurrections review

Warner Brothers in their infinite wisdom decided the world needed another Matrix film and strong-armed Lana Wachowski into having another go at the series. The reviews and reactions so far have been polarising, and now it's time for Paul and Wayne to wade in.

 

Does it do what it says on the tin and resurrect the Matrix film series after the deplorable Revolutions 18 years ago? Or is this the final nail in The Matrix shaped coffin and a waste of around $190 million dollars?

 

Paul, in particular has a lot of skin in this game, so is he able to shrug off the Negatron label for one week? And what will Wayne do when the fashion in this one is not as noteworthy or classy as in the original trilogy?

Battle of the Toms - Tommy Lee Jones vs Tom Hanks vs Tom Hardy

For the first episode of 2022, the guys are buying themselves a bit more time before the worst and best of 2021 shows, by honouring a request from top-level Patron to the show and understudy to Henry Cavill himself, Adam Mileur. Adam wanted to know who is the definitive Top Tom (copyrighted!) between Tommy Le Jones, Tom Hanks and Tom Hardy.

 

Now, you might be asking yourself where's Tom Cruise? But Adam was savvy enough to now Wayne's list would be skewed toward T to the C, and thus eliminated him from the equation. Such is the power of the top level Patron!

 

Still, Wayne is so discombobulated by the lack of Cruise control that he somehow forgets to count in this episode, while Paul is just shocked his co-host - finally! - hit a brief.

Hawkeye review

Disney+ has finished dropping eps of its last MCU series for 2021, meaning the boys can now give their thoughts on Hawkeye.

 

Wayne has seen the whole thing, while Paul only managed to get through the first four eps in time for this recording. As such, Paul leaves Wayne all on his own for most of the spoiler-filled part of the review, so who knows how far off the rails this one really goes?

 

But off the rails it does leap because one of the guys enjoyed Jeremy Renner's turn in the spotlight and one did not. It's probably pretty obvious whom is whom, but will one be able to change the other's opinion? Or will no ground be given?

Top 10 Live Action Disney Films

It's (apparently) the most wonderful time of the year, and to celebrate the end of 2021 and the fact that most people have holidays of some description for this event, the boys are recommending some wholesome family entertainment for you in the form of the Top 10 Live-Action Disney films.

 

Live-action, of course, means no animation through the film (though special effects are permitted), so wait and see how long it takes for Wayne to throw a film out that 100% has animation in every scene. But is Paul any better? Has he also disregarded the brief with one of his picks?

The hype has been unbelievable; the wait unbearable. But now, finally, Spider-Man is back in one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history (in your face, COVID!), and the boys were lucky enough to catch an early screening of this with thanks to Sony Pictures Australia.
