With the new format allowing big pivots away from film and TV, the boys leapt at the chance this week to do a very different episode. So instead of bantering about what is good and what isn't on the box, in the theatre, or from your stereo speakers, the boys this week are (largely) eschewing the jokes about sexual organs and are instead recounting their Top 5 True Spooky Encounters.

 

In this spine-tingling episode, you'll hear about everything from possession by an animal to a bona fide exorcism, by way of a seance gone wrong and nights spent in haunted houses. All of which happened to one of the lads or to a direct contact of theirs. And stick around to the end, when a few listeners weigh in with their scary tales, one of which was enough to cause a cold shiver of dread down Paul's spine when he made the mistake of reading it late at night, while alone in the dark ...

Renfield review

Universal takes another bash at a classic monster that it owns, but this time livens things up by casting Nicolas Cage as Dracula, and making him play second fiddle to another Nicholas, this one of the Hoult variety, in the newly released Renfield.

 

But after 6 weeks out in North America, the boys know this one hasn't set the world on fire, and are determined to learn for themselves whether this one has been unfairly overlooked or actually earns its rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

There is some agreement, much swearing, occasional shock, and more than a smattering of incredulity. There's also plenty of The Soundboard. But most of all, there's laughter as all of the a$$es are eaten for one last time ...

FAMILY.

 

Vin Diesel is FAMILY. And he is also the equal of J. R. R. Tolkien (at least in his own mind). But we can't bad-mouth FAMILY, so just roll with it. Like the cars do in this - and all the previous entries in this franchise - they roll, literally, and keep on driving. Because that's what you do when FAMILY is on the line.

 

How do we know this? Well, because Vin Diesel says it is so. And like Kanye West, he's FAMILY. So what FAMILY says, goes. Who can argue against that? Not Wayne and Paul. Because they would never argue with FAMILY.

The Worst 8 Films of the Last 8 Years

In some circle, the show must go on. But when it comes to The Countdown Podcast, the a$$e$ must be eaten!

 

So despite Paul coming down with COVID and Wayne completely losing his voice (but not having COVID - go figure), the boys have bravely taken the mic to record the third part of the 8 All the A$$e$ celebration of 8 years of the show, this time counting the very worst films they've seen since the podcast began in March 2015.

 

There are hot takes and squeaky voices aplenty, but at the end of the day it was all worth it to name and shame these filthy films and celebrate the show making such a milestone!

Polite Society review

With COVID striking the podcast this week, and the NON-infected co-host losing his voice, the lads were very pleased to have this recent recording up their sleeves for this newly released British-Pakistani production. Part comedy, part martial arts film and seemingly very Edgar Wright inspired, Wayne was the first one to jump at this, and he convinced Paul to get on board.

 

After all, both co-hosts are members of society, right? And at least one of them can be polite when the occasion demands it ...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 review

Phase 5 of the MCU resumes with the final installment in a previously beloved series, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

 

Paul and Wayne were of course on hand to witness the end of this particular era as well as the first use of an F-bomb in the MCU! *gasp shock horror*

 

Can James Gunn nail the landing with a series that for a series that many feel is among the strongest in the MCU? Or did being fired for long-ago inappropriate tweets and then re-hired after he made splash with DC colour this finished product ...

 

There's only one way to find out - at least when it comes to the perspectives of two podcasters from Perth, Western Australia named Wayne and Paul - as The Countdown continues ...

The Worst 8 TV Shows of the Last 8 Years

The first part of the show's four-part series celebrating 8 years of The Countdown is here!

 

Having been given the sub-title of 8 All the A$$es$ month (with thanks to Sam Hurley from the Movie Reviews in 20 Q's Podcast), the series begins with the boys taking aim at the worst 8 television shows of the last 8 years.

 

Now you might think that after 8 years, these two fools would have worked out how to specify a brief, but you would be wrong! As Paul has decided to interpret the brief one way and Wayne - much to his outrage and consternation - in another. In other words, it's Bizarro World throughout this Ep, but it at least maintains the usual crass, over the top humour and hot, hot takes that you've come to expect from the show.

The Mandalorian Season 3 review

The one successful Star Wars series has finished it's third season on the Disney+ streaming service, so of course, it's time for Wayne and Paul to assess what Jon Favreau and the House of the Mouse have brought us ...

 

Wayne is the unapologetic Star Wars fan, so he has many thoughts on this thirs season following Din Djarin and Grogu, primary among them: Just how much interest from the ladies will admitting his fandom lose him? Paul, meanwhile, is trying to get his head around some of the complete filler episodes that have been trotted out here, but will they affect his overall view of the season?
