The Countdown

January is here and with it, the films that studios like to dump into theatres, hoping against hope that they might make some dollars.

One such film is the new Jason Statham film as directed by David "Don't Blame Me for Suicide Squad" Ayer and, well, it's making money. As such, the boys considered it their civic duty to see this one and report back on it to you, dear listener ...

Have the lads been bamboozled into seeing a poor film> Or have Statham and Ayer combned for that rarest of rare, rare treats: A quality January film? Find out as The Countdown continues ...

Countdown #457

Here it is. The biggest Ep of the year detailing the very best films of the previous year requires an incredible guest. And that incredible guest is Jason from the Binge Movies Podcast. It also requires a lengthy discussion about the merits (or perhaps, lack thereof) of these films, making for one of the longest Eps in The Countdown's history.

(Julio would be proud; Gerald, less so.)

Get on board, then, for this in-depth discussion of the best releases to hit cinemas across the year that was 2023. Enjoy the surprising comedies, the frightening horrors, the well-acted dramas and the shocking superhero films that make this most coveted of lists.

And as if that's not enough, enjoy Wayne as he somehow underlines the major message from one of the biggest releases of the year - a moment that threatens to completely break this Episode in two ...

... as The Countdown (hopefully) continues ...

Please thank Jason by checking out Binge Movies or, heck, head on over to The Slashers podcast where both Jason, Paul and Megan from Spoilerpiece Theatre, join forces to create a show all about the golden age of the Slasher film.

The boys finally get along to see a film which has been hitting all the Top 10 lists of 2023, just in time for their own episode of the same.

But is this the shot in the arm Kaiju films needed? Or is it more of the same ol' , same ol' when it comes to Godzilla and its decision to chow down on most anything Tokyo-shaped?

One of the lads has this as the greatest thing since sliced-bread, while the other is a little more luke-warm. Meanwhile, this Episode took about 73 false starts to get going, as you will hear if you hang around to the end of the recording ...

Who is right? Who is wrong? And who will finally get the opening right? Find out as The Countdown continues ...

Countdown #456

Bravely flying in the face of those who say doing "Worst Of" lists are tacky and inappropriate, Paul and Wayne this week deliver to you their annual PSA in relation to the poorest films of the preceding year.

Yes, it's time to name and shame those films which completely fumbled the ball, that defecated in the bed, that thieved us of our hard-earned, and then, in some cases, tried to tell us we wanted more!

Every genre from horror to action, comedy to drama by way of superhero cinematic universes feels the brunt of the boys' disappointment and anger in this Ep, so listen in to learn what you should steer well clear of .... or to maybe hear your least favourite films called out ... as The Countdown continues ...

Netflix kicks off the New Year in the best possible way, at least according to Paul, with their release of the based-on-a-true-story, survival epic, Society of the Snow.

Wayne, for some inexplicable reason, does not like this type of film, which leads to the first disagreement on the show for 2024 and the provocative use of The Soundboard.

But who is right? And who would eat the other without hesitation should they crash anywhere without food? Decide for yourself, as The Countdown continues ...

Countdown #455

The boys, this week, complete their look back at television through 2023 with a countdown of their favourite shows of the year! It was a banner year for television as evidenced by both Paul and Wayne having ten shows and honourable mentions to talk about, making for a jam packed episode.

Wayne starts things off controversially and some might suggest his list never recovers, while Paul, meanwhile, stays pretty true to form - both in terms of his list and in keeping Wayne honest with some of his hot takes.

In other words, it's what you've come to expect from the podcast, but with plenty of TV to keep you occupied through the early stages of 2024.

Speaking of, Happy New Year to all ... as The Countdown continues ...

So the DCEU ends ... like THIS?

Join Wayne and Paul as they query why DC and the WB would bother with a final DCEU film that takes zero chances, is completely rote and horrendously predictable, and contains more Mamoa "Ya-HOO!"s than could possibly be considered safe for human hearing.

And yet, one of the boys quite liked Lost Kingdom and the other goes to town on it. Which is whom? And does anyone care given this is turning into another box office bomb?

Countdown #454

Having watched enough of the "idiot box" to split the traditional Best and Worst of the previous year's television into two episodes, the boys this week countdown their least favourite shows of the year that was 2023.

There's plenty of questions asked of Marvel, while Paul takes aim at a master of horror's latest foray into television, and Wayne, incredibly, has harsh words for a reality show based around MILFs!

So join Wayne and Paul to find out what you should NOT be spending time watching this holiday season, as The Countdown continues ...

Zack Snyder returns to our screens with his rejected idea for Star Wars courtesy of Netflix. And since Zach Snyder is always going to Zach Snyder, Wayne and Paul have volunteered to determine whether this is one of the occasions when Zach should have Snydered, rather than Zaching his way into some very, very low critical reactions.

Will Wayne appreciate the visual flair in Rebel Moon? Can Paul forgive the short-comings of its script? And, at the end of the day, is Disney - in the place of George Lucas - going to sue themselves a Zach?

Countdown #453

It's Top 10 Last 10 time, as the boys look back on the latter parts of 2023 and mini-review 10 films each that are first time watches, but otherwise have no linking criterion. Of course, this is The Countdown, so:

- said films are ranked from worst to best

- Wayne says inappropriate things

- Paul Soundboards it up in response to said inappropriate things, while honouring the late, great Andre Braugher; and

- there is more French musketeer action than you can poke a sword at. (To be fair this one is not a usual staple of the show, but worth pointing out nonetheless.)

In other words, jump on board for a guide on what to watch and avoid this festive season, as The Countdown continues ....

Oh and Merry Christmas, you filthy animals (to those who celebrate).
